Located West of the Ashley River, West Ashley is Charleston’s oldest and nearest suburb. The area offers extensive dining and shopping options, including the busy Highway 17 corridor and the up-and-coming Avondale district. Avondale boasts locally owned boutiques and unique dining spots like Voodoo Tiki Bar and Gene’s Haufbrau, the self-proclaimed oldest bar in Charleston. In addition, Avondale has a sought-after residential district filled with cute bungalows. Newer neighborhoods and apartment complexes continue to add to the extensive area.
While it’s a bustling retail and residential area, West Ashley is also home to natural and historical attractions such as Charles Towne Landing, where colonists established the first permanent European settlement. Hiking and biking trails weave through the park situated on the Ashley River, and a small zoo is housed there as well. Most of the area’s plantations are located within or near West Ashley’s border, including Magnolia Plantation, Middleton Place, and Drayton Hall.
