A suburb of Charleston, James Island is located between the city of Charleston and Folly Beach. It’s surrounded by Wappoo Creek, the Charleston Harbor, and the Stono River. The area is filled with established and brand-new neighborhoods, including some beautiful waterfront property. Busy Folly Road is James Island’s main artery, conveniently populated with a wide variety of stores and restaurants. Lined with beautiful live oaks, Maybank Highway leads to Johns, Kiawah, and Seabrook Islands, and is home to the Terrace Theatre, one of the area’s only indie movie houses.
The sprawling James Island County Park has extensive trails for running or biking, a dog park, and a water park. The annual Holiday Festival of Lights transforms the park into a light-filled winter wonderland, drawing thousands of visitors each year. The municipal golf course, operated by the City of Charleston, is a favorite with local golfers.
