Awendaw is a small fishing town located between Mt. Pleasant and McClellanville. Although the town was not officially established until 1992, it boasts a rich history — it’s been inhabited more than 4,000 years, according to some sources. Named for the Sewee tribe that once called the area home, this nature lover’s paradise is home to the Francis Marion Forest, the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, the International Center for Birds of Prey, and the Sewee Visitor and Environmental Center. The annual Blue Crab Festival, held every fall, draws visitors from all over the state, and Awendaw Green is a popular music and event venue.
